Put the Wrong Fuel in One Tank of Your Dual Tank 4WD
If you have put the wrong fuel in one tank of a dual tank 4WD, leave the engine off and do not run the transfer pump or switch tanks. Keeping the contamination isolated in one tank is what makes the fix quick, and a mobile drain can empty that tank wherever you are.
Dual tanks are one of the best things you can have on a touring 4WD, right up until the moment the wrong nozzle goes into one of them. Then that second tank turns into a decision you have to get right in the next thirty seconds, because a dual tank misfuel comes with a trap that single tank vehicles never face: the temptation to spread the problem. This one is for the tourers, the LandCruiser and Patrol crowd, and anyone running a long range tank under the tray, because the rules are slightly different for you, and knowing them can turn a ruined trip into a delay of an hour or two.
Why Touring 4WDs Get Misfuelled on the Road
The touring setup is practically designed to produce this mistake. You are filling two or three tanks in one servo stop, often somewhere unfamiliar, often late in the day with a long way still to go. The van or camper needs its gas, the jerry cans need topping, the main and sub both get the nozzle, and somewhere in that juggling act at a strange servo, concentration slips. Fatigue is a real factor too. The fill that goes wrong is rarely the first one of the trip, it is the one at five in the afternoon on day three. How Dual Tank and Long Range Fuel Systems Work
Not all second tanks are the same, and the difference matters when one of them is full of the wrong fuel. Factory twin tank setups, like the ones Toyota has fitted to LandCruisers for decades, typically run a main tank that feeds the engine and a sub tank that transfers into it, either with an electric transfer pump you control from the cabin or through a valve arrangement. Aftermarket long range tanks vary even more: some replace the main tank entirely, some sit alongside it with their own transfer pump, and some gravity feed through a balance line that is always open. That last detail is the important one. On some setups the two tanks are genuinely separate until you press a button. On others they are quietly talking to each other the whole time.
Wrong Fuel in the Main Tank vs the Sub Tank
Where the wrong fuel landed changes the size of your problem. If it went into the sub tank and the transfer pump has not run, you may be in the best misfuel position there is: the contamination is sitting in a sealed box that has never touched the engine, the pump or even the main tank. That tank gets drained, flushed and refilled, and the rest of the vehicle never knows anything happened. If it went into the main tank, treat it exactly like any modern diesel misfuel: the engine must not run, because the main tank is what feeds those fine tolerance common rail components that petrol destroys. And if you are not sure which tank got it, or the servo receipt shows both were filled, assume both until someone with a tester confirms otherwise.
Do Not Switch Tanks or Run the Transfer Pump
Here is the trap. Every dual tank owner’s first instinct is to use the system’s flexibility: switch to the clean tank and drive on, or transfer fuel around to sort it out later. Please do not. Running the engine on the clean tank still risks pulling contamination through shared lines, common filters and return plumbing, depending on how your particular system routes fuel, and you will not know how yours routes it from the driver’s seat. Running the transfer pump is worse again, because it takes a problem contained in one tank and personally delivers it to the other one. The whole reason a dual tank misfuel can be cheap to fix is isolation. Every switch you flick works against that. Leave the ignition off, leave the transfer alone, and you have preserved the best version of this situation.
Getting Both Tanks Checked and the Right One Drained
The fix itself is methodical rather than complicated. The technician confirms which tank holds the wrong fuel, drains it completely including the pickup and any pockets behind the baffles, checks whether the transfer system or shared lines moved any of it, changes or clears the filter if there is any doubt, and refills with clean diesel. Only then does the engine start. It is the same drain and flush process we run at servos every day, with one extra layer of care for the plumbing between the tanks. Done this way, most dual tank vehicles are back on their trip the same day, with the clean tank untouched and its fuel still in it.

Can I keep driving on the clean tank until the drain?
It is tempting and we do not recommend it. Many dual tank systems share return lines, balance lines or a common feed point, so contamination can migrate in ways you cannot see from the driver’s seat. Park it, keep both tanks still, and let the technician confirm what is actually isolated.
Can the fuel in the clean tank be saved?
Usually yes. If the technician confirms that tank never received wrong fuel and never shared it through a transfer or balance line, that fuel stays put and you only pay to replace what was drained from the contaminated side.
How much longer does a dual tank drain take than a normal one?
Allow roughly half as long again. One tank drains like any other vehicle, but the technician also checks the transfer system, the lines between tanks and the filter before clean fuel goes back in and the engine is started.
Do jerry cans on the roof rack cause the same problem?
They cause a delayed version of it. A mislabelled can gets poured into a tank three days later on a remote track, far from help. If you carry fuel on a trip, label every can clearly with its contents and the vehicle it belongs to.
