Petrol in Diesel Repair Cost: Pump, Injectors and Tank vs a Same-Day Drain
If the engine never ran, petrol in a diesel is a drain and flush job. If it ran, the bill moves to parts. A high pressure pump for a common ute starts around $1,700 before labour, a set of four injectors starts around $2,100, and the fitting, coding and fuel system clean-out go on top. That’s why one turn of the key changes the cost so much.
Why the Engine Running Decides the Bill
We won’t repeat the full mechanics here, because we’ve covered how petrol damages a diesel pump and injectors separately. The short version is that petrol sitting in the tank costs nothing extra. Petrol pushed through a pump running above 2,000 bar is what turns a callout into a parts invoice.
What Each Part Costs to Replace
Part prices for the 3.0 litre Isuzu D-Max, a diesel we see more of on Hunter roads. Larger engines and Euro diesels tend to be more expensive.
High Pressure Fuel Pump
This is the first part to suffer. One Queensland supplier lists a genuine pump for the D-Max 4JJ1 from $1,695, parts only. Fitting it means removing parts of the front of the engine, then priming and bleeding the system, so labour adds several hours.
Diesel Injectors
Injector replacement cost is where the bill really climbs, because they’re usually replaced as a set. The same supplier lists genuine Denso injectors from $545 each, or from $2,145 for all four. Each new injector then has to be coded to the engine computer, which is extra workshop time on top of the parts.
Fuel Tank, Lines and Filter
A scored pump will spew metal shavings throughout the system, so be prepared to flush and perhaps replace the tank and lines before you damage the new parts immediately. You’ll be wanting a new fuel filter on any such job. Some cars will need to drop the tank to clean it out, which is extra labour.
Labour, Coding and Diagnostics
Only half the bill is for parts. To diagnose the failed parts, fit them, program the injectors, bleed air out of the system and road test the vehicle, we also charge a fee. Labour rates vary between dealers and independent diesel specialists, so make sure to get a quote detailing parts and labour before agreeing to anything.
How the Cost Builds by Scenario
| What happened | What usually gets done | Relative cost |
| Engine never started | Drain, flush, refuel with clean diesel | Lowest |
| Started and stalled quickly | Drain, flush, new filter, diagnostic check | Low |
| Driven a short distance | Above, plus possible pump replacement | High |
| Driven several kilometres | Pump, full injector set, filter, lines, possible tank clean | Highest |
The last two rows are where you see a pump and injector set together, which is over $3,800 in parts alone on a D-Max before any labour or coding.
Why a Drain First Is Always the Cheaper Call
A mobile drain before the engine runs costs a fraction of any single part in that table, and it’s done on the spot. We break down what affects that price in our fuel drain and flush cost guide. Even if the engine has already run, draining it before anyone tries to start it again stops more damage being added to the bill.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my insurance pay for a damaged pump and injectors?
It depends on your policy. Some comprehensive policies treat misfuelling as accidental damage and others exclude it. Our guide to insurance cover for wrong fuel covers what to check in your PDS.
Can reconditioned injectors bring the cost down?
Often, yes. Reconditioned or exchange injectors are usually cheaper than new genuine units, but quality varies between suppliers, so ask what warranty comes with them.
Is the damage covered by my new car warranty?
Usually not. Manufacturers generally treat misfuelling as driver error. We explain why in does wrong fuel void your warranty.
