Water is heavier than petrol and diesel, so it does not blend in and disappear, it sinks and sits at the bottom of the tank, which happens to be exactly where the pump draws from. So where does it actually come from? Four places, mostly, and only one of them is anyone’s fault.
Rain, Storms and Flooding Around the Filler
The most direct route is the obvious one. A perished or missing filler cap seal, a cracked flap, or a filler neck that has rusted around the join will let rainwater in, and it does not take a storm to do it, just enough wet weather and enough time. Then there is the serious version, which anyone who has been through a Hunter wet season knows too well. Driving through floodwater, or parking somewhere that floods, can put water into the filler area and into the tank itself, and a vehicle that has been sitting in water deep enough to reach the filler should be treated as suspect on the fuel side even if it started and drove afterwards. Boats and trailers get their own version of this: an open ramp, a rough day, and water finding its way into a deck filler that was not quite sealed.
Condensation Inside the Tank and Why It Gets Overstated
This is the cause everyone has heard of and the one most articles exaggerate, so let us be straight about it. Condensation is real: warm humid air in the empty space above the fuel gives up moisture as the temperature drops overnight, and that moisture ends up in the tank. But the amount of air involved matters enormously, and a car that gets driven and refuelled every week simply does not have enough empty tank space, or enough time, to accumulate a meaningful puddle. Where condensation genuinely earns its reputation is in vehicles and machines that sit. The caravan parked for eight months with a quarter tank. The boat over winter. The tractor between seasons. The spare ute nobody has started since autumn. If something in your shed matches that description, the old advice to store it with a full tank is sound, and it costs nothing to follow.
Ethanol Blends Holding Water Until They Cannot
Petrol with ethanol in it behaves differently to straight unleaded, and this one is worth understanding because it surprises people. Ethanol will hold a small amount of water in suspension, roughly half a percent, and up to that point the fuel simply carries it along and burns it without much drama. Past that threshold, the mixture gives up. The ethanol and water drop out of the petrol together and settle as a separate layer at the bottom of the tank, which is called phase separation. Two problems arrive at once: there is now a corrosive water and alcohol layer sitting right where the fuel pickup is, and the petrol floating above it has lost some of the ethanol that was contributing to its octane. This is the mechanism behind a lot of the trouble people blame vaguely on bad fuel, and it is more likely in vehicles and equipment that sit for months than in a daily driver.
Water in Service Station Underground Storage Tanks
Sometimes the water was already in the fuel before you ever touched the nozzle. Servo fuel lives in large underground tanks, and those tanks can take on water through a worn seal, a damaged fill point or a poorly draining forecourt during heavy rain. Because underground storage carries real environmental risk, it is a regulated business, and the state environment authority sets the rules operators follow for maintaining and monitoring those systems. Good operators dip and monitor for water routinely and catch it early. The gap opens up when a site is poorly maintained, when heavy rain arrives faster than anyone checks, or when older monitoring gear misreads the situation, because a phase separated layer under ethanol blended petrol does not behave the way a plain water bottom does. The tell for a driver is timing and pattern: trouble that starts within a tank or two of one particular servo, and better still, other people reporting the same thing about the same site in the same week.
Jerry Cans, Farm Tanks and Long Term Fuel Storage
The last route is the one people forget because it happens away from the vehicle. Fuel stored in cans, drums and farm tanks lives through the same overnight temperature swings as anything else, usually in containers with more air space and worse seals than a car’s fuel tank, and often for far longer. A can that has been sitting half full on a shed floor through a wet summer can be carrying water without looking any different. Bulk diesel on a property is the bigger version of the same problem, and it matters more, because everything on the place gets fuelled from it. Water in stored diesel is also the ingredient that makes microbial growth in the tank possible in the first place, since the colony lives in the layer where water meets diesel. No water, no bug.
Keeping Water Out of Your Fuel Tank
None of the prevention is difficult. Check that your filler cap seals properly and that the flap area is not rusted or cracked, which is a thirty second look. Store vehicles, boats and machinery with the tank full rather than a quarter full, so there is less air to give up moisture. Keep jerry cans sealed, off the ground, out of the weather, and do not keep petrol for years. If you run a bulk tank, dip it for water on a schedule rather than when something goes wrong, and drain your water separator when the light comes on rather than the following weekend. And if you have driven through floodwater or the car has been sitting in it, get the fuel checked before you assume the worst is over.

Can you see water in petrol or diesel?
Sometimes. Water is heavier than fuel, so it sits at the bottom of a tank rather than mixing in, and a sample drained into a clear jar will often show a distinct layer or a cloudy, hazy look. Small amounts carried in suspension are invisible until the engine complains.
Does keeping the tank full really stop condensation?
It helps, because less empty space means less humid air inside the tank to give up moisture. It matters most for vehicles and machines that sit for weeks between uses. For a car driven every day and refuelled regularly, it makes very little practical difference.
Will a fuel filter or water separator deal with it?
Only up to a point. Many diesels have a water separator with a drain plug that handles the small amounts fuel picks up in normal use, and warns you when it fills. It is not designed to cope with a slug of water from a bad tank of fuel or a flood.
Should you avoid filling up while the tanker is refilling the servo?
It is old advice with a grain of truth, since a delivery can stir up whatever is resting at the bottom of the underground tank. Modern site filtration makes this far less of a worry than it once was, but if you see a tanker on site and you are not desperate, coming back later costs you nothing.
